Two wounded in shootings overnight; homicide victim identified

Two men were wounded in a drive-by shooting early toay, one of two cases of gunfire that came about 90 minutes apart and one mile away from each other on the city's East Side, Buffalo police said.

Meanwhile, police this afternoon identified the victim of Sunday morning's fatal shooting on Weber Avenue as Jermaine Wilson, 29, of Garden Grove, Calif.

The two men wounded in the more recent incident were shot at 12:30 a.m. by the occupants of passing car as the pair left a house on Carl Street, between East Delavan and Northland avenues.

Police described the vehicle as an older-model, four-door sedan that was gray or silver.

Multiple shots were fired. One victim, Antwon Staward, 26, of Buffalo, was shot once in the right knee, while Donnell Taylor, 29, also of Buffalo, was shot in his right knee and left foot, police said.

The men were treated at the Erie County Medical Center for their injuries, which are not believed to be serious, Chief of Detectives Dennis J. Richards said in a statement.

The first shooting occurred just after 11 p.m. Sunday on French Street, between Fillmore Avenue and Kehr Street, when two brothers driving down the street were caught in gunfire.

Several bullets hit the brothers' Pontiac Trans Sport minivan, flattening one of the tires, but no one was wounded.

Investigating officers found two different types of shell casings in the street following the shooting.

The Weber Avenue shooting victim was identified one day after he was found lying in the first block of the small East Side street, near Bailey Avenue and Genesee Street.

Wilson was shot at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday and was declared dead at the scene, according to police. Buffalo homicide detectives continue to investigate the slaying.

Anyone with information about any of the incidents is asked to call the department's confidential TIP CALL line, 847-2255.
